Manchester Children's Hospitals NHS Trust
Manchester Children's Hospitals were faced with the challenge of raising £10m voluntary income as part of a PFI scheme to relocate specialist children's services to a new state of the art hospital in the centre of Manchester. The move would enable the best possible care for children in the North West, but would require the closure of two well-loved but ageing hospitals at Pendlebury and Booth Hall.

Between July and November 2000, Sandcliff was asked to test the feasibility of launching a major capital appeal, against a background of local uncertainty. The project required an objective stance; clear understanding of the role of voluntary funding within a health care setting and careful handling of the sensitivities of the situation.

For an appeal of this size to succeed, the hospitals would need a lead gift of at least £1m and strong and influential campaign leadership.

  • Sandcliff identified potential campaign leadership together with possible major gifts from individuals, companies and from charitable trusts.
